The short version

You buy HardRedact once and may use it for as long as you like. It is a tool that helps you redact documents — you remain responsible for reviewing what it finds and for what you release. It does not certify legal compliance, and it cannot promise to find every sensitive item in a document.

1Who these terms are with

These terms are an agreement between you and [LEGAL ENTITY] of [BUSINESS ADDRESS], the publisher of HardRedact. By downloading or using the software you accept them. If you are using it for an organisation, you confirm you may accept these terms on its behalf.

2Your licence

Purchasing HardRedact grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, perpetual licence to use the version you bought and any updates we make available to you. There is no subscription and no expiry.

A licence may be activated on the number of machines stated at purchase. If you replace a computer, contact us and we will move the activation across.

You may not:

resell, sublicense, rent or redistribute the software;
share your licence key publicly, or use it beyond your activation limit;
remove or alter the licensing mechanism, or circumvent it;
present the software as your own product or service.

We keep all intellectual property in the software. You keep everything in your documents; we acquire no rights over them at any point.

3Trial

HardRedact runs for seven days with every feature unlocked. When the trial ends, opening, detecting and reviewing continue to work; only exporting is disabled until you enter a licence key. We do this deliberately so that an expiring trial can never strand you in the middle of reviewing a document. Trial output is never watermarked or degraded.

4What the software does, and what it does not do

HardRedact finds likely personal information, applies the redactions you accept, and then re-examines the result and issues an audit certificate recording which checks passed.

You are responsible for reviewing the document. The software proposes; you decide. Nothing is removed on its own judgement, and an export that leaves sensitive information in place because it was not detected, or because it was rejected during review, remains your responsibility.

The audit certificate attests that the items you accepted were removed and that the checks it lists passed. It does not certify that all sensitive content in the document was found. The following limits apply to every version currently sold, and appear on every certificate the software writes:

It does not read text inside images. There is no OCR; words burned into a scan are not detected automatically.
It cannot prove absence of text it was unable to decode, and says so when that happens rather than reporting a pass.
It is not a compliance certification. No HIPAA, SOC 2, ISO, GDPR or FOIA claim is made or implied.
Exemption codes you apply to a redaction are labels you have chosen. They are not legal determinations, and we do not check them.
It acts on one output file. Your original, your backups, previous copies and anything already sent remain untouched and are your responsibility.

HardRedact is not legal advice, and using it does not create a professional relationship of any kind. If a disclosure carries legal consequences, have a qualified person review it.

5Refunds

If HardRedact does not do what you need, write to hello@hardredact.com within 30 days of purchase and we will refund you in full. You do not need to justify the request. We offer a full-featured trial precisely so that you can decide before paying.

6Updates and availability

We may release updates that fix defects, improve detection or verification, or add features. We are not obliged to maintain the software indefinitely, but a licence you have bought keeps working on the version you have, offline, regardless of what we do later.

7Warranties

We have tested HardRedact extensively and it refuses to deliver a file that fails its own verification. Even so, the software is provided as is, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that it will detect every item of sensitive information or that it will be free of defects.

8Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, our total liability arising out of or relating to HardRedact is limited to the amount you paid for it. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for loss of profits, data, goodwill, or for any disclosure of information that occurs because sensitive content was not detected or was not accepted for removal during your review.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits any right or remedy you have that cannot lawfully be excluded — including, where they apply, consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law, rights under the UK Consumer Rights Act, or equivalent protections in your country. Where such a right applies, it stands regardless of anything above.

9Acceptable use

Do not use HardRedact to conceal evidence you are legally required to preserve or produce, to alter records in breach of a court order or a legal duty, or for any unlawful purpose. Redacting a document does not relieve you of a disclosure obligation.

10Termination

You may stop using the software at any time. We may terminate a licence if it is used in serious breach of these terms — for example redistribution or circumvention of licensing — and where we do, we will tell you why. Sections 4, 7, 8 and 11 survive termination.

11Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of [JURISDICTION], and the courts of [JURISDICTION] have non-exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute. This does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory consumer laws in your own country.

12Changes to these terms

We may update these terms for future purchases and will change the effective date above. The terms you agreed to when you bought your licence continue to apply to that purchase.
